CompTIA Security+ study guide
CompTIA Security+ is an entry-level cybersecurity certification. This guide breaks the exam into its five domains and explains each one in plain language, with key terms and a short self-check on every page.
Exam version: these notes follow SY0-701 (V7). CompTIA plans to launch SY0-801 (V8) on or around November 17, 2026. SY0-701 stays available in English until June 11, 2027. Book the version you studied for.
Why Security+ matters
- A common starting point. Security+ is a vendor-neutral certification. It covers core security skills instead of one company’s products, which is why it’s often listed for entry-level security and IT jobs, such as security analyst or systems administrator.
- Used by the US Department of Defense. Security+ is one of the certifications that can meet the qualification requirements for several cybersecurity and IT work roles under the US DoD 8140 program.
- A foundation for what comes next. The exam covers the basics most security work builds on: controls, threats, architecture, day-to-day operations, and risk and governance.
Is this for you?
Be realistic before you start:
- Time. The exam has up to 90 questions (multiple choice plus hands-on “performance-based” questions) and you get 90 minutes. Most people study for weeks or months first.
- Money. Each attempt needs a paid exam voucher. At the time of writing, CompTIA’s US store lists a voucher at around US$439, and a retake means buying another voucher. Check CompTIA for current pricing in your country.
- Experience. CompTIA recommends having Network+ and two years of experience in a security or systems administrator role first. That’s a recommendation, not a requirement. If you’re brand new to IT, the networking and systems basics will help a lot.
- No guarantees. These notes are a study aid. They don’t replace the official exam objectives and they can’t promise a pass. You need a scaled score of 750 (on a 100–900 scale).
The five domains
- Domain 1: General Security Concepts · 12% of SY0-701
- Domain 2: Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations · 22% of SY0-701
- Domain 3: Security Architecture · 18% of SY0-701
- Domain 4: Security Operations · 28% of SY0-701
- Domain 5: Security Program Management and Oversight · 20% of SY0-701
Also handy: the acronym list (Security+ uses a lot of them).
How to use this guide
- Read the notes for one domain. Each section is short on purpose.
- Go through the key-term cards. Try to say each definition out loud before you open the card.
- Do the self-check at the bottom. If you miss one, reread that section.
- Compare what you’ve covered against CompTIA’s official exam objectives, then practice with hands-on labs and full-length practice tests.
